Bad Breath Prevention

I say bad breath prevention is easy. Really, it’s nothing to worry about. You can forget about all those commercials you’ve seen on TV.

Bad breath prevention starts with good oral hygiene. Nothing fancy, just the basics. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, like your mother told you to do. If you can, brush after meals, so you get rid of most of those little food bits that cause bad breath.

People who brush twice a day usually do so after breakfast and at night, either after their evening meal or just before going to bed. That is because they are at home with their bad breath prevention “tools.” No need to tote a toothbrush and toothpaste with them. Yes, it is best if you brush your teeth after every meal, but I don’t expect you to.

By brush I mean a rigorous use of your toothbrush. And use plenty of toothpaste. Of course you need to brush the front, back and top of every tooth. Start at the gum line and work your way along the surface of each tooth.

You also should brush your tongue. That is where most of the bacteria live in your mouth. Just take a look at the surface. Doesn’t that move you to bad breath prevention?

Flossing is very good for bad breath prevention. I know people are not as good about flossing as they are about brushing. It is more work. It is messy. So most people floss only once a day, if they bother to floss at all.

Many people use a mouthwash for bad breath prevention. The product is available in grocery stores and pharmacies. You probably can find a mouthwash with a taste you like. You can get one that tastes medicinal or you can get one with a nicer flavor.

Simply drinking water is a very effective bad breath prevention method. It doesn’t have to be bottled water. The regular stuff out of the tap works fine. Drinking water throughout the day works because it keeps your mouth moist. The bacteria that cause bad breath in your mouth thrive in dry areas.

Common bad breath prevention goods are chewing gum, breath mints and breath strips. They are popular because they are small and easy to carry. They aren’t the best products, but they help.

Watching your diet is a bad breath prevention technique people tend to ignore. Yes, we know what garlic and onions can do to our breath. We have lots of experience when others have eaten them. Most people are not aware that foods high in protein tend to cause bad breath more than other foods.

You’ll have better bad breath prevention if you eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Moist foods, like lettuce and tomatoes, are very effective. If you are having a salad, be careful about the dressing you put on it. Some of those are very bad at causing bad breath.
